Conservative Group Files Another Ethics Complaint Against AOC for Misuse of House Resources

A conservative group has filed another ethics complaint against Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) for her shady professional relationship with her boyfriend, Riley Roberts.

The Coolidge Reagan Foundation — a conservative, First Amendment activist group — filed a complaint with the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) against Ocasio-Cortez for misuse of congressional resources relating to interactions with Roberts.

As IJR previously reported, the Coolidge Reagan Foundation also filed a Federal Elections Commission (FEC) complaint against Ocasio-Cortez and her campaign manager-turned-chief of staff, Saikat Chakrabarti, after it was revealed that Chakrabarti’s PAC paid Roberts a total of $6,000 within two months of his LLC being paid $6,191.32 by Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign.

The OCE complaint is unrelated to the campaign payments and instead calls for an investigation into an official email address provided to Roberts by the congresswoman.

As IJR reported earlier, Luke Thompson, a conservative strategist, realized that Roberts was listed on Ocasio-Cortez’s team.

The congresswoman denied that there was anything nefarious going on. She claimed that Roberts was just given an email address so he could see her calendar. Chakrabarti also chimed in to quash reports that Roberts may be getting paid for whatever he’s doing in Ocasio-Cortez’s office.

This exchange between Thompson, Ocasio-Cortez, and Chakrabarti spiraled quickly. Shortly after the email address was noticed, Thompson realized that Chakrabarti’s PAC was paying Roberts. This revelation prompted an investigation into how Chakrabarti was running his LLC and PACs, which triggered another separate FEC complaint about potentially funneling around $1 million.

Somewhere in the middle of this chaos, Ocasio-Cortez and her team pulled Roberts’ email address from the staff list.

Removing Roberts from the email list didn’t stop the Coolidge Reagan Foundation from moving forward with the OCE complaint.

In a statement about the complaint against Ocasio-Cortez, Coolidge Reagan Foundation Chairman Shaun McCutcheon said:

“AOC has gotten away with utter hypocrisy for far too long. The Coolidge Reagan Foundation will do whatever it takes to expose AOC’s transgressions and hold her accountable. We’re going to actively monitor AOC’s campaign finance reports and congressional actions to push back on her un-American, anti-speech agenda.”

It isn’t clear what will come of the complaints filed against the congresswoman. Beyond the two FEC complaints, this is the first complaint about the Ocasio-Cortez scandal that has been taken to the Office of Congressional Ethics.
