This week President Donald Trump denied a stunning climate change report released by his own administration. Now, former Vice President Al Gore is setting the record straight on why he believes the president needs to tackle the “global emergency.”
In an interview with Trevor Noah on the Daily Show Wednesday, Gore laid out just how serious the current climate crisis is.
“We are treating the atmosphere as an open sewer,” he said, adding that the amount of man-made heat and energy released into the air every day is hurting the planet. “The cumulative amount now traps as much heat energy every day as would be released by 500,000 Hiroshima class atomic bombs exploding every 24 hours.”
Noah joked with the former vice president how there’s a “very famous scientist that lives in the White House” that claimed this week the United States is doing better than in regards to clean air and water. But Gore said that’s not because of Trump.
“The U.S. air is cleaner because of some of the laws that Donald Trump is now trying to get rid of,” Gore said, citing legislation such as the Clean Air Act.
“It’s really significant, Trevor, that Donald J. Trump is now the face of climate denial. His voice is the voice of climate denial.”
Gore added that he believes Americans and people all over the world are tired of Trump’s “constant craziness.”

But Gore sees a positive response to Trump’s climate change denial, citing the “blue wave” results of the 2018 midterm election.
“You know in physics there’s this well-known principle: for every action, there’s an equal and opposite reaction,” Gore said, adding that he thinks there’s a great opportunity to vote Trump out of office in 2020.
“This experiment with Trumpism is not going very well, and by the way, in science and medicine, some experiments are terminated early for ethical reasons.”
