A Constitutional amendment has been introduced into the U.S. House of Representatives that would allow President Donald Trump a third term in office.
The resolution was introduced Thursday by U.S. Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN.) and would amend the U.S. Constitution to allow a president who has not served two consecutive terms in office, to run for a third term.
“No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times, nor be elected to any additional term after being elected to two consecutive terms, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice,” the resolution reads.
According to CNBC, Ogles said in a statement to the news outlet that Trump must be given time to accomplish his goal of bringing the U.S. back from “decay” and restore America “to greatness” after former President Joe Biden and his administration’s “disastrous course.”
“[Trump] has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness, and he must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal,” Ogles said in the statement, adding, “It is imperative that we provide President Trump with every resource necessary to correct the disastrous course set by the Biden administration.”
Ogles noted Trump and his administration are dedicated to restoring the U.S., and that lawmakers must support this effort, further noting the bold leadership of Trump is what is needed to do it.
“He is dedicated to restoring the republic and saving our country, and we, as legislators and as states, must do everything in our power to support him,” Ogles said, “I am proposing an amendment to the Constitution to revise the limitations imposed by the 22nd Amendment on presidential terms.”
Currently, the 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution declares “no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”
CNBC further reported the 22nd Amendment was introduced in 1947 and ratified in 1951, after former President Franklin Roosevelt was elected to office four times.
