WATCH: Sen. Booker Quotes Bible, Says You’re ‘Complicit’ in ‘Evil’ if You Don’t Oppose Kavanaugh

Some Democrats seemed to freak out after President Donald Trump announced he would nominate Judge Brett Kavanaugh to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy, solidifying a conservative majority on the Supreme Court.

While many of the initial reactions focused on Kavanaugh and his alleged ideology, Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) took things a step further on Tuesday when he appeared to demagogue people into opposing Kavanaugh’s nomination.

“I’m here to call on folk to understand that in a moral moment, there is no neutral. In a moral moment, there is no bystanders,” Booker said during a press conference.

With Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and a deacon by his side, Booker suggested that passively accepting Kavanaugh’s nomination was tantamount to participating in evil.

“You are either complicit in the evil, you are either contributing to the wrong, or you are fighting against it,” he said.

Earlier this month, Booker unleashed a tweetstorm in which he detailed his reasons for opposing Kavanaugh:

Booker, like many others, cited the threat that Kavanaugh’s confirmation would pose to Roe v. Wade, the landmark court decision that restricted states’ ability to prohibit abortion.

Kavanaugh seemed like a solid pick for religious conservatives who opposed abortion and cited Bible verses like Psalm 139:13, which, in the New International Version (NIV), says, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.”

During his press conference on Tuesday, Booker also cited from Psalms but quoted Psalm 23:4:

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.

Booker, apparently likening himself to the psalmist, suggested Kavanaugh’s nomination brought him and others to the valley of the shadow of death.

Extending the comparison, Booker claimed that like the psalmist, Democrats should continue “walking” through the valley rather than just remaining in place.
