Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) made an apples and oranges comparison Monday, saying that the economic struggles of Americans negatively impacted by the trade war are nothing compared to what U.S. service members face overseas.

Cotton, who appeared on “CBS This Morning” to promote his new book “Sacred Duty: A Soldier’s Tour at Arlington National Cemetery,” was quickly called out for his comment on “sacrifices.”

“There will be some sacrifices on the part of Americans, I grant you that,” Cotton said. “But I also would say that sacrifice is pretty minimal compared to the sacrifices that our soldiers make overseas that are fallen heroes that are laid to rest in Arlington make that I write about in ‘Sacred Duty.'”

CBS host Gayle King pointed out that the comparison is unfair, but Cotton soldiered on.

“[Farmers] look at the sacrifices that soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines make around the world and they’re willing to bear some of those sacrifices in the short term, but also in the long term to assure our long-term prosperity and security,” he claimed.

The United States increased tariffs on China Friday as part of an ongoing trade war headed by President Donald Trump. According to CBS News, trade experts believe the new tariffs can cost the average American family $700 to $1,000 a year.

Among the hardest hit by tariffs are American farmers, who are bringing in fewer profits as the trade war escalates.

Josh Mahoney, a Democrat running against Cotton in the next Senate race, called out the senator for using the military in his trade war talking points.

“This is disgusting,” Mahoney tweeted. “My opponent Tom Cotton shouldn’t use the sacrifices of our troops to cover up for a disastrous trade war. Arkansas families are hurting because of this, and all Cotton is offering is offensive BS like this.”
