On Sunday, pop star Taylor Swift endorsed two Democratic candidates from her home state of Tennessee, an action that seemed to upset some of her listeners.

I’m writing this post about the upcoming midterm elections on November 6th, in which I’ll be voting in the state of Tennessee. In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now. I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country. I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent. I cannot vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love. Running for Senate in the state of Tennessee is a woman named Marsha Blackburn. As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I cannot support Marsha Blackburn. Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me. She voted against equal pay for women. She voted against the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which attempts to protect women from domestic violence, stalking, and date rape. She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples. She also believes they should not have the right to marry. These are not MY Tennessee values. I will be voting for Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives. Please, please educate yourself on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values. For a lot of us, we may never find a candidate or party with whom we agree 100% on every issue, but we have to vote anyway. So many intelligent, thoughtful, self-possessed people have turned 18 in the past two years and now have the right and privilege to make their vote count. But first you need to register, which is quick and easy to do. October 9th is the LAST DAY to register to vote in the state of TN. Go to vote.org and you can find all the info. Happy Voting! ???

“I will be voting for Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives,” Swift said on Instagram. “Please, please educate yourself on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values.”

Swift criticized Republican senatorial candidate and Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) for her positions on a couple of social issues:

As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I cannot support Marsha Blackburn. Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me. She voted against equal pay for women. She voted against the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which attempts to protect women from domestic violence, stalking, and date rape. She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples. She also believes they should not have the right to marry. These are not MY Tennessee values.

Swift’s Tennessee values apparently didn’t match up with those of some of her fans’:

Conservative activist Charlie Kirk suggested Swift didn’t know what she was talking about:

But a lot of people also supported Swift, as BuzzFeed News reported. Many celebs were among those in support:

“Our democracy thanks you,” actress Molly Ringwald tweeted.

Swift’s endorsements even grabbed the attention of the The National Republican Senatorial Committee, which helps Republicans seeking election nationwide.

In a press release, the group criticized Swift for imposing her values on Tennessee voters. “If you haven’t heard, multimillionaire pop star Taylor Swift came down from her ivory tower to tell hardworking Tennesseans to vote for Phil Bredesen,” the release read.

It went on to criticize Swift’s candidate for allegedly trying to hide evidence of sexual harassment.

What do you think?

She is not telling people what to do. She says what she will do and why
. She advises for everyone to educate themselves about each candidate and support the ones who reflect their values. Many here are way off in the way they express themselves. SWIFT is doing what every citizen should do . Their civic duty, thats all.

Taylor went for years not expressing any political opinions or views, until now. Because of this, the crazies in the Alt-right movement, including that wonderful piece of work, Milo Yianyoyo, co-opted her by putting her on this “white” pedestal for fascists and white nationalists. Their puny heads must be exploding over this. Love it!

Blackburn has destructive policies against net neutrality. She also used federal funds to falsely accused Planned Parenthood of terrible things just to raise her public profile (she’s an unhinged wacko). She is pro-Trumpov, so hopefully the Tennessee voters recognize the dangers of electing her to any office.

Actually she said “Please, please educate yourself on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values.” So she is not telling anyone how to vote. She voiced her political opinion just as you have numerous times. I don’t see the problem.

Just another looney hollywood elite. Why don’t you write more articles on someone who matters… like Kanye!

People have a right to their opinions – that isn’t taken away just because a lot of people like her music.

I’m so done with Taylor Swift. Shes not the same person she was and its not for the better.
It’s a shame she blast Marsha Blackburn, that’s such a wonderful caring Lady that would work hard for TN.
The DemoRats are not the same ppl back in the day but a bunch of paid off Radical followers and not leaders..
Suppose she cant see what they represent today as shes of the Blind!!

You can tell where she gets her “political education” by who endorsed her rant. Shut up skank. You know nothing of which you speak.
