Well, here we are again. Another December, another tree, and another mind-boggling attempt to erase the word Christmas like itâs some kind of slur. And this time, itâs not a right-wing senator or some fed-up small-town mayor calling it out. No, folksâitâs David Spade. Yes, that David Spade. The âJoe Dirtâ guy. The dry-witted, mostly apolitical comedian whoâs now apparently too âChristianâ for your local Michigan mall.
On a recent episode of his podcast Fly on the Wall, which he co-hosts with fellow SNL alum Dana Carvey, Spade vented about a tree lighting ceremony he attendedâor tried to attendâthat seemed to go out of its way to avoid the word âChristmas.â Not âHappy Holidays.â Not âSeasonâs Greetings.â Just⌠âtree lighting.â Like it was some mysterious pagan rite with no context whatsoever. A festive pile of lights in December that, heaven forbid, actually mean something.
Spade said the mall (unnamed, but he claimed it was in Michigan) intentionally left out the word Christmas during the entire event. He summed it up in a way only a sarcastic Hollywood veteran could: âSo itâs just a tree? ⌠A December to Remember? Is it a Lexus dealership?â
And honestly, heâs not wrong.
What exactly are we celebrating if we canât even say the name of the holiday that inspired the whole thing? Why are malls, of all placesâthose temples of capitalism that practically owe their fourth-quarter survival to Christmas shoppingâtiptoeing around the word like it might trigger a lawsuit?
Spade didnât hold back, even suggesting that the effort to avoid saying âChristmasâ was a level of politically correct absurdity that made no sense. Carvey agreed, saying that the non-Christian friends in his life werenât offended by it. In fact, they liked the holiday just fine, complete with all the lights, the music, the food, and yes, even the word. Imagine thatâpeople enjoying a cultural tradition without needing it sanitized, stripped, and repackaged into something meaningless.
Letâs face itâthis kind of thing doesnât happen by accident. Itâs intentional. You donât âaccidentallyâ leave the word Christmas out of an event called a tree lighting in December. You do it because someone, somewhere, decided that acknowledging the most celebrated holiday in the country is suddenly controversial. That maybe itâs saferâwoker, perhapsâto just pretend itâs some generic winter ritual where we stand around blinking lights and drink overpriced cocoa without asking why weâre doing it.
Even Spadeâwho openly described himself as more âspiritualâ than religiousârecognized the absurdity of all this. At one point, he said, âIâd say stop that bullsh*t,â referring to the weird verbal gymnastics these public venues now perform to avoid offendingâŚwell, nobody, really. Because most Americans, regardless of their religious beliefs, understand what Christmas is and donât clutch their pearls when someone mentions it.
He even touched on something the media never talks aboutâactual persecution of Christians in other parts of the world, like Nigeria, where being a believer is not just unfashionable, itâs dangerous. But sure, letâs pretend the real oppression is someone hearing the word âChristmasâ at a tree lighting in suburban Michigan.
Look, this isnât about a tree. Itâs about a culture thatâs been slowly backing away from its own identity for yearsâone polite press release at a time. When comediansâespecially the kind who typically steer clear of culture war landminesâstart sounding the alarm, maybe itâs time to ask why weâre bending over backward to make the majority feel invisible.
If we canât say âChristmasâ in December without fear of upsetting the Twitter mobs or the local diversity committee, what can we say anymore?
So hereâs a thought: maybe, just maybe, itâs time to stop apologizing for traditions that have defined this country for generations. David Spade wasnât being edgy. He was being obvious. And that might be the most rebellious thing a Hollywood comedian can do in 2025.
Merry Christmas, folks. Say it while you still can.
