An Illinois lawmaker is dealing with calls to resign after she wished harm upon a Republican’s family due to a disagreement over a policy issue.
The comments came after Republican state representative Peter Breen raised questions about a bill that would help families of those that were affected by a Legionnaires’ outbreak at a state-run veteran’s home.
He pointed out that there were issues over who would be the main beneficiaries of the bill.
“And, yes, we know the personal injury lawyers are going to make out like bandits, which they tend to do anytime they come to the General Assembly,” said Breen.
This prompted Representative Stephanie Kifowit, the co-sponsor of the bill, to fire back at the lawmaker.
“To the representative from Lombard, I would like to make him a broth of Legionella and pump it into the water system of his loved one so that they can be infected, they can be mistreated, they can sit and suffer by getting aspirin instead of being properly treated and ultimately die,” said Kifowit.
Republicans in the House today exploded in anger over the comments of @RepKifowit in which she spoke of Rep Peter Breen's family drinking a stew of Legionella bacteria. Breen then called her out for attacking his family. The lawmaker and Marine Corps veteran took to Twitter to explain what she meant by the comments in now-deleted tweets.
Fellow Republican Representative Jeanne Ives called out Kifowit for trying to backtrack her comments.
“How dare you. How dare you concoct up some sort of story about brewing up some batch of Legionella and having him feed it to his family,” Ives said to the Chicago Sun Times. “How dare you take the discussion and the debate about a very serious bill that has a huge cost consequence on both sides, both for the victim and the state taxpayers. How dare you take an honest debate about an issue and then wish death on my colleague Peter Breen, his wife and his two adopted kids.”
In response, Republican Rep. Jeanne Ives blasted Democrat Kifowit: “How dare you concoct up some sort of story about brewing up some batch of Legionella and having him feed it to his family…How dare you…wish death on my colleague Peter Breen, his wife, and his 2 adopted kids” pic.twitter.com/bhv5xblep9

The Illinois Republican Party also called for Kifowit to resign.

Over a dozen lawsuits have been filed against the veteran’s home involved in the situation.
