During an interview on “Morning Joe,” Senator Dick Durbin revealed his reaction to Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal. The hosts pressed Durbin on whether he would vote on the legislation in the Senate.
“I can’t tell you,” said Durbin. “I have read it and I have reread it and I asked [Senator] Ed Markey, ‘What in the heck is this?'”
As IJR previously reported, the Green New Deal promotes progressive policies such as universal healthcare and getting rid of all fossil fuels within the next ten years.
Durbin also responded to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s announcement that he is planning to send the legislation to a vote in the Senate.
“It’s an aspiration. It’s a resolution. What we’re going to ask the Republican leader, ‘What’s your position on global warming?’ while we’re at it,” Durbin said. “Should he come out on the record and tell us if human activity is having an impact on our environment. Get on the record on both sides.”
Democratic Party leadership keeps trying to quell the grassroots movement for @AOC's Green New Deal, even as nearly every 2020 Democrat endorses it. Why not fight?

However, Durbin did admit that he agreed with the lawmakers that climate change is something that needs to be addressed.
“I look for it and there’s nowhere for it. I will tell you I certainly agree with the premise that global warming is a threat to the planet and we’re not doing enough,” said Durbin.
The Green New Deal has been extremely divisive between lawmakers, with many questioning how the government could possibly sustain the proposed programs.
