Democratic Michigan State Sen. Mallory McMorrow announced Monday that she was endorsed by Berrien County Commissioner Chokwe Pitchford less than a week after one of her opponents in the state’s Senate race falsely claimed his endorsement.

Democratic Michigan Rep. Haley Stevens touted Pitchford supposedly backing her campaign in the state’s open Senate race via a Sept. 2 X post — but the local politician rebuffed the endorsement claim later that day. McMorrow took to social media on Monday to post a video of Pitchford instead endorsing her in Michigan’s open Senate race.

“Proud to have you on this team, @ComPitchford,” McMorrow wrote. “Let’s do good work.”

Pitchford reposted McMorrow’s Monday X post, writing, “Hey, I actually endorsed this time! Let’s go @MalloryMcMorrow,” in an apparent reference to Stevens’ falsely claiming that he had endorsed her in the Senate contest.

Stevens wrote in a since-deleted Sept. 2 post that she felt “truly honored to be endorsed by Commissioner Pitchford,” adding that his work is “inspiring.” Pitchford quickly denied ever backing Stevens in the Michigan Senate race, writing in a post to X that he “literally never endorsed her or heard a word from her team.”

“I promise you, I have not talked to anyone, emailed anyone about endorsements, or even hinted that I would be open to endorsing her,” Pitchford wrote further in the social media post.

A spokesperson for Stevens’ campaign told MLive in a Sept. 2 statement that there was a “miscommunication” about Stevens’ false endorsement claim, but did not elaborate further about the incident.

The race to succeed retiring Democratic Michigan Sen. Gary Peters is anticipated to be one of the most highly competitive races in the upcoming midterm elections. A National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) poll found that the state’s Democratic primary contest had no clear frontrunner, with 42% of Democratic primary voters remaining undecided, the Daily Caller News Foundation first reported on July 8.

In addition to Stevens and McMorrow, the Democratic primary race also includes former public health official Abdul El-Sayed, a far-left candidate who has the endorsement of Independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Stevens’ campaign did not respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.
