An ICE operation in Minneapolis spiraled into violence Tuesday evening when an illegal immigrant from Venezuela—released into the U.S. under the Biden administration—reportedly ambushed a federal officer with the help of two others wielding a shovel and a broom handle.

Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin first broke the story, citing four law enforcement sources. The encounter unfolded as federal agents attempted a traffic stop on the suspect, who fled the scene, crashed his vehicle, and then tried to escape on foot. When an officer caught up, things took a brutal turn.

According to a Department of Homeland Security statement, the suspect resisted arrest and began assaulting the officer. Two additional individuals emerged from a nearby apartment and joined the attack—armed with a snow shovel and broomstick. As the officer was being overwhelmed, the original suspect reportedly got free and also struck the officer, prompting the ICE agent to open fire.

The suspect was shot in the leg. He and the officer were hospitalized, and both are in stable condition. All three attackers were taken into custody after barricading themselves in the apartment.

Now, as predictable as sunrise, activists are already descending on the scene, even before all the facts are clear—because that’s the playbook. Disrupt, distract, and deflect from the criminal behavior.

Meanwhile, Minnesota’s top Democrat leaders, Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, are under fire for fueling anti-ICE sentiment. Federal officials didn’t mince words: the attack occurred as Walz and Frey were “actively encouraging an organized resistance to ICE and federal law enforcement.”

Let that sink in.

While ICE agents are out trying to arrest criminals—people in the country illegally who assault law enforcement with blunt weapons—Democratic leaders are playing politics and pushing rhetoric that’s only making the job more dangerous.

ICE officers are facing a 1,300% increase in assaults, per DHS. That’s not a stat—it’s a warning.

Update: More from Melugin:

BREAKING: DHS statement to @FoxNews

At 6:50 PM CT, federal law enforcement officers were conducting a targeted traffic stop in Minneapolis of an illegal alien from Venezuela who was released into the country by Joe Biden in 2022.

In an attempt to evade arrest, the subject fled the scene in his vehicle and crashed into a parked car. The subject then fled on foot.

The law enforcement officer caught up to the subject on foot and attempted to apprehend him when the subject began to resist and violently assault the officer. While the subject and law enforcement were in a struggle on the ground, two subjects came out of a nearby apartment and also attacked the law enforcement officer with a snow shovel and broom handle.

As the officer was being ambushed and attacked by the two individuals, the original subject got loose and began striking the officer with a shovel or broom stick.

Should political leaders be held accountable for anti-ICE rhetoric during violent incidents involving law enforcement?

Fearing for his life and safety as he was being ambushed by three individuals, the officer fired defensive shots to defend his life. The initial subject was hit in the leg.

All three subjects ran back into the apartment and barricaded themselves inside.

The attacked officer and subject are both in the hospital. Both attackers are in custody.

This attack on another brave member of law enforcement took place while Minnesota’s top leaders, Governor Walz and Mayor Frey, are actively encouraging an organized resistance to ICE and federal law enforcement officers.

Their hateful rhetoric and resistance against men and women who are simply trying to do their jobs must end. Federal law enforcement officers are facing a 1,300% increase in assaults against them as they put their lives on the line to arrest criminals and lawbreakers.

And the people enabling this chaos? They’re not just ignoring the threat. They’re encouraging it.

So how does the media frame it?

Here’s the NYT’s:

This is the headline NYT went with for the ICE shooting in MN. No mention of alleged shovel attack, multiple suspects involved in alleged attack, legal status of the targeted illegal alien, etc. https://t.co/KjrV7N3yzF pic.twitter.com/D5a20BZ6fk

This is where the “resistance” movement has led us: federal agents being ambushed with shovels in broad daylight.

But sure, let’s blame ICE.
