President Donald Trump responded to former first lady Barbara Bush‘s criticisms in a new biography on Thursday, saying he can understand why “she’s been nasty” to him.

In an interview with the Washington Times on Thursday, Trump laid out his opinion of the late Barbara Bush and her family.

“I have heard that she was nasty to me, but she should be,” the president said. “Look what I did to her sons.”

In a new biography by journalist Susan Page, “The Matriarch: Barbara Bush and the Making of a Dynasty,” Bush’s disdain of Trump is revealed to date all the way back to 1990, when she called him “the real symbol of greed in the 80s,” however, her animosity only grew during the 2016 election.

“Look, she’s the mother of somebody that I competed against. Most people thought he [Jeb Bush] was going to win and he was quickly out,” the president boasted.

“I hit him very hard in South Carolina,” Trump said. “Remember? He was supposed to win South Carolina and I won it in a landslide.”

“I hit him so hard,” he added.

Trump also shared his opinions on former President George W. Bush, saying he didn’t support Jeb enough during the campaign.

“That’s when his brother came to make the first speech for him,” the president continued. “And I said, ‘What took you so long?'”

It’s easy to understand why Barbara wasn’t a fan of Trump, as he has launched many insults to the Bush family, both collectively and individually.

In his tweets during the election, Trump frequently targeted the Bush brothers, calling the family “Dumb as a rock!”

Trump has also called Jeb Bush an embarrassment to his family, an incompetent campaigner, “the last thing our country needs,” and has also insinuated he’s ashamed of being a Bush.

However perhaps the most controversial attack was an insult Trump spewed to Jeb and his wife where he tweeted (and soon deleted) that Jeb likes “Mexican illegals because of his wife.”

JEB must be ashamed of his name to simply use his initials for “John Ellis Bush”. Johnny was the weak-kneed member of the family. Certainly not qualified to be in the WH.
