POTUS Lauds DeSantis’ ‘Courage’ on Sanctuary Cities Ban, Says ‘More States’ Want Similar Laws

President Donald Trump gave Governor Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) props for signing into law a state bill that essentially bans sanctuary cities in the state and claimed that other states want similar measures in place but their leaders are too afraid to go through with it.

In a pair of tweets published Sunday morning, Trump lauded the move by DeSantis — who previously served in the House of Representatives before being elected governor — and explained that the bill “prohibits local [government] from enacting sanctuary policies that protect undocumented immigrants.”

“Florida Governor Ron DeSantis just signed bill banning sanctuary cities in [the] state, [and] forcing all law enforcement agencies to cooperate with federal immigration authorities,” tweeted the president. “[The] bill prohibits local gov’t from enacting sanctuary policies that protect undocumented immigrants.”

Trump continued on to write that “more and more states” are wanting to implement similar legislation and “are demanding” that something is done about sanctuary cities, but their “governors and leaders” lack the “courage” to go through with it.

The legislation received local praise, as well.

As IJR Red previously reported, Brevard County, Florida, Sheriff Wayne Ivey applauded the enactment of the legislation, stressing that partnerships between state and local localities and federal immigration authorities were necessary to tackle the border crisis.

The new Florida law effectively bans sanctuary cities by requiring that localities comply with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainers for illegal immigrants arrested or convicted of criminal offenses while including exemptions for victims and witnesses.

ICE detainers are federal documents that request state and local governments hold immigrants suspected of committing crimes in custody. Jurisdictions that ignored these documents are dubbed “sanctuary jurisdictions.”

I disagree with the president. Cities in general will have the highest concentrations of Leftists and left-leaning governments.

States, counties, and other entities will be the ones to deny sanctuary status, just like FL state governor DeSantis just did.

I live in Florida and I’m very glad that Governor DeSantis signed this bill into law. Florida is over whelmed with illegals. Illegals working everything from agriculture, beef packing plants, hotel housekeeping, maintenance ect.. These are jobs that U.S. citizens and immigrants on work visa need. Illegals have been prominent in Florida since the mid 1960’s, if they go to other states fine maybe some of the lower educated people of the state can find a job and get off welfare. At least they won’t have the excuse of the illegals taking the jobs. These lower educated people used to… Read more »
