A sudden burst of seismic activity deep in the Nevada desert is raising eyebrows among scientists — and fueling speculation far beyond the research community.
According to the New York Post, data from the United States Geological Survey, at least 17 earthquakes were recorded in a single day near Area 51, the highly secretive military installation long tied to UFO lore.
The quakes, which ranged in magnitude from 2.5 to 4.4, struck relatively close to the surface — a detail that caught the attention of experts.
The strongest tremor hit just after 3 p.m. Wednesday at a depth of roughly 2.5 miles, followed by a series of smaller aftershocks.
The location of the activity added another layer of intrigue.
Area 51 sits about 80 miles from Las Vegas, in a remote stretch of desert typically not known for frequent seismic clusters of this type.
Geophysicist Stefan Burns described the situation as atypical.
He noted the swarm occurred in “an unusual place to get an earthquake,” pointing specifically to how shallow the tremors were compared to more common seismic events.
Burns also suggested the activity was “worth discussing in the context of ‘if this is a covert underground nuclear test,’” a remark that quickly drew attention online.
The comments, combined with the base’s reputation for secrecy, have led to a surge of speculation about what might be happening beneath the desert floor.
The timing of the quake cluster has only intensified interest.
Just days earlier, President Donald Trump hinted that new information related to unidentified flying objects could soon be made public.
“We’re going to be releasing a lot of things that we haven’t,” Trump said during a White House event alongside NASA astronauts.
“I think some of it’s going to be very interesting to people,” he added.
The president had also referenced the upcoming disclosures during a recent event hosted by Turning Point USA in Phoenix.
“The first releases will begin very, very soon. So you can go out and see if that phenomenon is correct. You’ll figure it out,” he said.
While scientists have not confirmed any connection between the earthquakes and speculative theories, the unusual pattern — combined with the location — has made the seismic swarm a topic of intense discussion.
For now, the tremors remain unexplained, leaving both experts and observers watching closely for what might come next.
