Families of Slain Dallas Police Officers Are Given News That Might Make Their Holidays a Tiny Bit Easier

It won’t bring the officers back, but for the families of the five slain Dallas, Texas, officers, it will help ease some of their worries.

In July, five Dallas police officers were killed by sniper-fire. Now, a New York-based charity, Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, has stepped in to help the families this Christmas season, reports WFAA. John Hodge of the foundation explains:

“Ultimately, we raised approximately $610,000 in five days to be able to assist these families.

Quiet frankly, [the money came] from all over the world.”

As a result of the donations, three of the families got their mortgages paid off while the other two received funds to help buy a home when they’re ready.

Dallas Police Association VP Beth Sundquist tweeted out a thank you to the foundation for the generous gift:

She was not alone in thanking them, writes Fox News Insider.

Widow of Sgt. Michael Smith, Heidi Smith, told WFAA:

“Michael worked so hard to provide for us. He worked many long hours away from myself and the girls, and we just want to thank everyone that was a part of it.”

And DART police officer Brent Thomspon’s widow, Emily Thompson, also expressed her gratitude:

“I can’t say thank you enough or express my gratitude enough.”

The good news does not end there for the families, either.

The Valley Morning Star reports that on Tuesday, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings announced that the combined efforts of two charities, Assist the Officer Foundation and The Dallas Foundation, collected almost $10 million in private donations to help the slain officers’ families.

The donations were made by people all over the world, and it took volunteers weeks of work to sort them out.

The monies raised will also go to help the officers who were wounded in the July attack.
