US Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) speaks to reporters as he goes to vote on the Laken Riley Act at the US Capitol in Washington, DC, on January 9, 2025. The Laken Riley Act -- which calls for the detention of undocumented immigrants charged with theft-related crimes -- is named for a 22-year-old student murdered by a Venezuelan man with no papers who was wanted for shoplifting. They may be on opposite ends of the political spectrum, but that is not stopping President-elect Donald Trump from having a meeting with Sen. John Fetterman (R-Pa.)

Fetterman has accepted an invitation to meet with Trump at Mar-a-Largo, per CBS News.

“That is the plan. Yes, we are going to have a conversation,” Fetterman said to CBS News about the meeting.

This meeting marks the first time a sitting Democratic senator will meet with Trump at his Florida residence since the election.

“I think that one, he’s the president, or he will be officially,” Fetterman said. “And I think it’s pretty reasonable that if the president would like to have a conversation — or invite someone to have a conversation — to have it. And no one is my gatekeeper.”

Trump and Muriel Bowser, the Democratic mayor of Washington, D.C., met last month to talk about the Trump’s inauguration and his second term, her office said in a statement.

Although a meeting between Trump and Fetterman is planned, a transition official warned the meeting has not been finalized.

Fetterman was the first Democrat to sponsor the Laken Riley Act. This would make the federal government detain noncitizens convicted or charged with burglary, larceny, theft or shoplifting.

A version of the legislation passed the House. It is now before the Senate.

“We absolutely need to have a secure border, and I have always also been incredibly supportive and protective for Dreamers,” Fetterman said on Tuesday.
