The lawyer representing the 19-year-old gunman who opened fire at a Florida high school this week said her client is “remorseful.”
On Thursday, Broward County authorities charged Nikolas Cruz with the killing of 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on Wednesday afternoon.
“He’s sad, he’s mournful, he’s remorseful,” defense attorney Melisa McNeill said. “He is fully aware of what is going on, and he’s just a broken human being.”
McNeill told reporters that just because she and her team are tasked with defending Cruz “doesn’t mean we don’t care about the people of this community, the people of this state, the people of this country.”
“I had to have the exact same conversation that every parent in Broward County had to have with their children this morning,” she explained. “Then I had to walk and meet with [Cruz]. I’m fully aware of the impact that this has on the people that live here.”
Before the country moves into a “national conversation” about what happened in Parkland and how to stop it, McNeill said, it’s important to give the families impacted by the attack space to mourn.
