Democratic senate candidate Angela Alsobrooks defeated former two-term Republican Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan to represent Maryland in the U.S. Senate.

Decision Desk HQ called the race for Alsobrooks at 9:30 p.m on Nov. 5, with Alsobrooks taking 56.1% of the vote and Hogan at 42% with 20% of the votes in. The AP also projected Alsobrooks’ victory at 9:32 p.m.

Alsobrooks, the county executive of Prince George’s County Maryland since 2018, will replace Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin, who did not run for reelection following three terms in the Senate.

Alsobrooks comfortably defeated Democratic Maryland Rep. David Trone in the state’s Democratic primary in May, during which Trone spent more than $60 million of his own personal fortune on the race.

Alsobrooks took advantage of tax exemptions she did not qualify for on two properties she owns in Maryland and Washington, D.C., CNN was first to report. Alsobrooks owes D.C. nearly $50,000 in unpaid property taxes and has pledged to pay the bill in full.

The soon-to-be Maryland senator notably supports an assault weapons ban and late-term abortions.

Republican South Dakota Senator Steve Daines, chair of the Senate GOP’s campaign arm, personally recruited Hogan to run in the deep-blue state, which has not elected a Republican senator since 1980.

Though Hogan led Alsobrooks in initial polling of the race, every independent poll conducted since June found the Democratic candidate ahead of Hogan.

Given Maryland residents’ high marks for Hogan’s time as governor, Hogan’s campaign was able to make the Senate contest a competitive race despite running in a state where registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans by more than a two to one margin.

Hogan notably rejected former President Donald Trump’s endorsement after the Republican presidential nominee voiced his support for Hogan during an interview in June.
