A new creative chapter is unfolding for Goldie Hawn, but the actress says one constant in her life continues to bring her lasting fulfillment: her decades-long relationship with Kurt Russell.
According to Fox News, as she prepares to release her first children’s book, “The After-School Kindness Crew: Pooch on the Loose,” co-written with Lin Oliver, Hawn reflected on the personal philosophy that has guided her through both her career and her private life.
“My life’s mission is to be happy. My life’s mission is to be an example for my children and my family,” Hawn said during an interview with PEOPLE.
She acknowledged that perspective becomes increasingly important with time.
“As you get older, things can get harder. Your state of mind matters. How you look at life matters, how you value moments in your life matters, because you’re feeding your own brain. So, I say, ‘Right now, everything is amazing.'”
That sense of contentment extends to her relationship with Russell, whom she has been with since the early 1980s.
“When I say freedom, it means liberation. I don’t feel penned in,” she said. “We don’t always agree on stuff, which is fine. We’re both very spontaneous. [Our relationship] fed on a lot of goodness, a lot of wonderful life together.”
Their bond, she explained, has been strengthened by a shared commitment to family. Hawn is the mother of Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson from her previous marriage to Bill Hudson, while Russell has a son, Boston Russell, from an earlier relationship. Together, they share a son, Wyatt Russell.
Family, she said, has remained their foundation despite differences.
“We don’t agree on everything,” Hawn said in a previous interview. “His politics are different than mine. You know, there’s all these things that could divide you. But the one thing that we have, the greatest thing in God’s world, is our family.”
“That is where we thrive and where we have incredible amounts of joy and really focus on that.”
Hawn also recalled what first drew her to Russell, emphasizing that it went beyond surface-level attraction.
“He is a family man,” she said. “I can’t explain it, but he was the one for me. It wasn’t just because he was sexy and handsome and all of those things you get turned on by; it was because he matched my devotion to children to be No. 1. The seduction was really his personality and his focus on the children.”
Their daughter, Kate Hudson, has also spoken about the dynamic within the family.
“They’ve been together 40 plus years. They are the center of our family,” she said. “I think from the outside it looks a certain way, but inside, our family is just nuts, in the best way.”
With her upcoming book release, Hawn said she is embracing change and growth in this stage of her life.
“I think, ultimately, every life has to have its sections. … Doing the same thing over and over again for your whole life is not as interesting to me,” she said. “And I decided at probably 55 or something … ‘What are you going to do for this next part of your life?’ And I knew that there was more out there to learn and to do.”
