Republican lawmakers are backing President Donald Trump following the White House’s letter sent to House Democrats regarding the impeachment probe.
White House counsel Pat Cipollone penned a letter on behalf of the president to congressional Democrats — including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) – on Tuesday.
The letter is in response to Democrats’ “numerous, legally unsupported demands made as part of what you have labeled contrary to the Constitution of the United States and all past bipartisan precedent-as an ‘impeachment inquiry.'”
The letter, in part, reads:
“Your inquiry is constitutionally invalid and a violation of due process. In the history of our Nation, the House of Representatives has never attempted to launch an impeachment inquiry against the President without a majority of the House taking political accountability for that decision by voting to authorize such a dramatic constitutional step.”
House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) is among those Republicans who are calling out House Democrats. He wrote in response to the Democratic-led House not “holding a single vote on the Floor” while pursuing the “all-out impeachment witch hunt against [Donald Trump].”
“This is a scam,” Scalise said. “The time for games is over. We won’t play by their fake rules.”
For weeks now, Dems have thrown due process out the window and abused House Committee powers in an all-out impeachment witch hunt against @realDonaldTrump without holding a single vote on the Floor.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) wrote in a series of tweets on Tuesday:
“House Democrats have wanted to undo the results of the 2016 election for three years, and now they’re rushing a sham impeachment process.
President [Donald Trump] is right to call out this rushed process because Democrats refuse to protect the transparency and basic fairness that have been integral to previous impeachment proceedings.”
Additionally, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) weighed in, as he tweeted on Tuesday evening, “Overturning the results of an American election requires the highest level of fairness and due process, as it strikes at the core of our democratic process.”
Trump reacted to McConnell’s tweet by calling the impeachment inquiry “the Greatest Witch Hunt in the history of the USA!”

Pelosi blasted Trump in response to the letter, as she wrote in a statement, “For a while, the President has tried to normalize lawlessness. Now, he is trying to make lawlessness a virtue.”
“The White House letter is only the latest attempt to cover up his betrayal of our democracy, and to insist that the President is above the law. […] The White House should be warned that continued efforts to hide the truth of the President’s abuse of power from the American people will be regarded as further evidence of obstruction. Mr. President, you are not above the law. You will be held accountable.”
In contrast, White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham wrote in a statement, along with the letter, that “the President has done nothing wrong, and the Democrats know it.”
“All of this violates the Constitution, the rule of law, and every past precedent. For these reasons, the Executive Branch cannot be expected to, and will not participate in, this exercise of partisan political theater.”
Grisham added: “President Trump and his entire Administration will, however, keep fighting for the American people, growing the economy, building prosperity, and protecting America’s interests at home and abroad.”
