House Republicans Call for Investigation Into Dem Senators Who Tried to Get Ukraine to Give Info on Trump

Several House Republicans are calling for an investigation into the three Democratic Senators who attempted to get dirt on President Donald Trump from Ukraine in 2018.

As IJR previously reported, Senators Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), and Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) all signed a letter asking Ukrainian General Prosecutor Yuriy Lutsenko to cooperate and send any information that could be beneficial to Special Counsel Robert Mueller‘s probe into alleged ties between the Trump campaign and Russia.

In essence, they asked a foreign leader to cooperate in an investigation that could harm their political rival, President Trump.

President Trump, meanwhile, is facing an impeachment inquiry from Speaker Nancy Pelosi for requesting that Ukrainian leaders look into the corruption allegations against 2020 contender Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden.

Given that so many Democrats see that as an impeachable offense, 14 House Republicans signed a letter demanding an investigation into the requests made by Leahy, Durbin, and Mendez.

“While hypocrisy certainly isn’t a crime, it is highly unbecoming of the office of a United States Senator. The documented actions of these three Senators are consistent with the allegations recently leveled by an anonymous whistleblower against the President of the United States — allegations which are themselves undocumented and have been discredited by President Zelensky of Ukraine himself, among others.

In light of the actions detailed above, we call for an investigation of the Senators in question, and whatever subsequent appropriate remedial action needed to hold them accountable. We do not ask this lightly, but it is critical to maintain public faith in the integrity of the Senate in these trying times.”

Of the calls for investigation, Congressman Rick Crawford (R-Ark.) — one of the 14 signatories of the letter — said:

“I have yet to see material evidence that President Trump asked for quid pro quo political favors from a foreign nation, but Democrats are accusing him of doing so and calling for his impeachment. Three of those Democrats did exactly what they accused the President of doing and should be held accountable for these actions.”

The letter was addressed to Vice President Mike Pence and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. It is unclear what action will be taken at this time.

Me thinks there’s a quid pro quo here. Although that only seems to be a problem when a Republican is alleged as the one doing it.

We need to let our Senators and Respresentatives know that we want these three investigated for inappropriate conduct. We don’t know what Trump’s motives were but there seems to be a legitimate reason for Trump to ask about an investigation into Hunter’s actions and what role his father played in them. It should not be off limits just because Biden is running for President. If that were the case then no requests for an investigation regarding Trump should be allowed. He is also running for President. The Dems are hoping that this investigation will slow support for Trump in the… Read more »

It’s time that Republicans started dealing with Democrats in exactly the same way Democrats have been dealing with Republicans. I can assure you, Democrats will complain, and they will not like being held to the same standard they have been applying.
