‘The Norm for Nancy Pelosi’: GOP Reps Shred Reported Controversial Riders Dems Are Pushing on Border Bill

Two Republican congressmen had some choice words for House Democrats after it was reported by Fox News that the party was plaguing a bill to address the crisis at the southern border with controversial riders that would adversely affect current immigration law.

As IJR Red previously reported, Fox News on Tuesday revealed in a report that House Democrats have been adding riders — legislative measures added to a bill that may be too controversial to pass on their own — that would “functionally nullify current federal immigration law,” according to a Republican source.

Republican sources familiar with the negotiations revealed that one rider would allegedly prevent interviews for asylum seekers from being conducted by border officials. Another would reportedly halt funds allocated to the Department of Health and Human Services from being used to share information on potential and current child migrant sponsors and their households.

The office of Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) told IJR Red on Tuesday that the Democrats’ “radical demands” illustrated how they are “fundamentally unserious about” tackling the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border.

“I hope the American people will see the sad truth: Republicans are ready to work on solutions, but Democrats continue standing in the way of progress,” added Gaetz’s office.

Two more Republican congressmen — Reps. Brian Mast (R-Fla.) and Mark Green (R-Tenn.) — also took issue with the reported riders.

Green blasted the Democrats’ move in a statement to IJR Red and demanded they work with the Republicans to secure the southern border as they would “never allow such a reckless bill to pass.”

“Adding riders to create open borders is not just partisan. It’s irresponsible and dangerous. Republicans will never allow such a reckless bill to pass. Democrats need to put mindless partisan games aside and work to secure our border now and end the suffering.”

Mast gave his own hot-take on the reported riders, as well, blasting the Democrats as putting “politics” ahead of “national security” and slamming the move as becoming “the norm” for Speaker of the House Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

“We are seeing a very real, undeniable crisis at our southern border, but as illegal immigrants and drugs continue to pour across our border, Democrats in Congress have decided that politics are more important than our country’s national security,” said Mast. “Sadly, this has become the norm for Nancy Pelosi.”

The reported radical riders come as the crisis at the southern border continues to grow.

As IJR Red previously reported, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) echoed the raised alarm by border officials, saying the country has “reached the breaking point at the border” during a hearing with acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan.

McAleenan pointed out in the hearing that the southern border “encountered a modern record of 144,000 border crossers” just last month and that “in the last 40 days, 60,000 children have entered into DHS custody, both unaccompanied and as a part of family units.”

What a cynical exercise of Cloward-Piven, i.e. overwhelm the system, and opening our borders. The legislators who added the riders will never feel the consequences but might, likely, harvest illegal votes. Consider their pushback on census polling on citizenship. So, if one supports supporting illegals through monies taken from taxpayers AND wants populace (q.v. constitutional republic) voting then by all means support the Dim agenda. note: typically short-sighted of the Dims. As demographics and culture shift do they see holding their offices long-term? Will voter pamphlets be in Spanish with English subtext? Will they need to be telenovela stars to… Read more »
