House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries invoked the murder of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Wednesday to attack President Donald Trump over the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

Jeffries suggested it is equally “outrageous” for Trump to pardon prisoners involved in the Capitol riot as it is to “politicize” the death of Zarutska. The 23-year-old victim got stabbed on a light train by Decarlos Brown, who had 14 prior convictions.

“I think it is outrageous that people are trying to politicize the death of this wonderful, young lady,” Jeffries said. “It’s outrageous that anyone would [do this]. What decency do people have at a moment like this as opposed to finding to find commonsense solutions. One thing I can tell you, that’s also outrageous, is that Donald Trump pardoned hundreds of violent felons who brutally beat police officers.”

WATCH:

Brown has served time behind bars for several heinous crimes, including armed robbery in August 2014, felony larceny and breaking and entering. Within months of his release, Brown faced more criminal charges for assaulting his sister.

North Carolina Magistrate Judge Teresa Stokes released Brown without bail in January and simply handed him a “written promise” to show up to court. Following his release, Brown immediately started acting erratically, which led his own mother to kick him out of her house. Brown’s mother did not want her own son released into the public because of his violent behavior and mental health.

Federal prosecutors charged Brown with one count of committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system, which carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment or death.
