Haley Calls for Emergency UN Security Council Meeting on North Korea

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has called for an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council in the wake of North Korea’s test of a missile that could have long-range capabilities.

Last night after the missile was tested, President Donald Trump tweeted:

For months, the Trump administration has been pressuring the Chinese government to do more to handle North Korea and has encouraged them to stop trading with the regime lead by dictator Kim Jong Un.

The Security Council meeting is reportedly taking place on Thursday afternoon. That comes just a few days prior to the G-20 Summit in Hamburg, Germany, that will be attended by both Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The U.N. Security Council is made up of five permanent members — the United States, China, Russia, France, and the United Kingdom — and 10 non-permanent members.

Recently, the Trump administration announced new sanctions on a Chinese bank from accessing the U.S. financial systems because of the bank’s alleged ties to North Korea.
