Democratic Massachusetts Rep. Bill Keating lashed out at Republican Texas Rep. Keith Self for referring to transgender Democratic Delaware Rep. Sarah McBride as ā€œmisterā€ during a hearing in a video circulating on X on Tuesday.

McBride is a biological male but identifies as a female and became the first transgender member of Congress in 2024. When Self called the Delaware representative ā€œMister McBride,ā€ McBride responded by calling him ā€œMadam Chairā€ before Keating jumped in. ā€œMr. Chairman, could you repeat your introduction again, please?ā€ Keating asked.

Self started to say that there is an established ā€œstandard on the floor of the Houseā€ before Keating interrupted to ask what the ā€œstandardā€ is and again requested that Self ā€œrepeatā€ the introduction he delivered for McBride.

Self obliged.

ā€œI will. The representative from Delaware, Mr. McBride,ā€ Self said.

ā€œMr. Chairman, you are out of order. Mr. Chairman, have you no decency? I mean, I have come to know you a little bit, but this is not decent,ā€ Keating said.

Self said he would ā€œcontinueā€ the hearing, but Keating objected.

ā€œYou will not continue it with me unless you introduce a duly elected representative the right way,ā€ Keating said.

Self then ended the hearing.

Republican South Carolina Rep. Nancy MaceĀ introduced a resolution in November to ban biological men from using women’s restrooms in the Capitol complex in response to McBride’s election. McBride complied with House Republicans’ demands to not use women’s bathrooms and facilities after Speaker Mike Johnson ordered that ā€œall single-sex facilitiesā€ in the Capitol and House office buildings are to be ā€œreserved for individuals of that biological sex.ā€

ā€œI’m not here to fight about bathrooms. I’m here to fight for Delawareans and to bring down costs facing families,ā€ McBride said in a statement. ā€œLike all members, I will follow the rules as outlined by Speaker Johnson, even if I disagree with them.ā€
