In a move that is raising questions across Washington and the military alike, U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has ordered hundreds of the nation’s highest-ranking military officers to report to a closed-door meeting at a Marine Corps base in Virginia next week.

The Washington Post first reported the sudden directive, which was delivered earlier this week. According to multiple accounts, even senior generals and their staffs have been left in the dark about the purpose of the gathering. The order reportedly extends to military leaders stationed not only in the United States but also abroad, reaching into active conflict zones and strategic regions in the Middle East, Europe, and Asia.

A Pentagon spokesman, Sean Parnell, confirmed to the Daily Mail that Secretary Hegseth will “be addressing his senior military leaders early next week,” but he did not elaborate on the agenda. No further clarification has been given to officers ordered to attend, fueling speculation about the scale and intent of the meeting.

Approximately 800 generals and admirals currently serve in the U.S. military across multiple branches and commands. Hegseth’s directive reportedly applies to commanders ranked brigadier general and above, as well as their top enlisted advisers. These individuals are responsible for leading some of the military’s largest and most sensitive operations worldwide.

The timing of the meeting has drawn attention because it comes just months after Hegseth and his team began a sweeping restructuring of the Department of War, formerly known as the Department of Defense. Among the changes announced earlier this year was a plan to reduce the number of senior military positions, with proposals to cut roughly 100 generals and admirals from active service. At the time, Hegseth described the move as necessary to eliminate “redundant force structure” and streamline the Pentagon’s “red-tape jungle.”

Sources within the Pentagon have described the sudden order as highly unusual. A former Pentagon official told the Daily Mail they could not recall a comparable instance where so many senior officers were summoned at once without an explanation. “Even if I wanted to, I couldn’t tell you why this is happening,” the source said, adding that it was “not exactly protocol.” They closed with a pointed comment: “Expect the unexpected with Hegseth’s Department of War.”

The closed-door meeting comes as top officials in Washington are reportedly working on a new national defense strategy. According to the Washington Post, the emerging plan shifts focus away from China as the primary threat and instead emphasizes homeland security. Sources familiar with the travel orders suggested this strategic shift could be on the agenda when Hegseth addresses the military’s top brass next week.

This latest directive follows a series of dramatic steps taken by Hegseth since taking over the newly renamed Department of War. In addition to slashing senior leadership positions, he has overseen the removal of several high-level officials and implemented changes designed to reorient the department’s priorities.

Secretary of War Hegseth reportedly orders an urgent meeting for all top generals and admirals, scheduled for next week.

It’s clearly not a secret, because they wanted the public to know about it.

Hegseth has also been outspoken about what he sees as problems within the military’s leadership ranks. On his podcast last year, he claimed that as many as one-third of senior officers were attempting to politicize the armed forces, a position that drew sharp criticism from some former defense officials.

For now, the details of next week’s meeting remain tightly held, leaving officers and observers alike to wait for answers. The unusual nature of the summons, combined with Hegseth’s recent restructuring efforts, has fueled speculation that significant announcements may be on the horizon.
