Hillary Clinton Concedes — And Offers Unifying Comment About What America ‘Owes’ President-Elect Trump

Hours after offering a private congratulatory phone call to President-elect Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton finally joined her campaign staff and supporters at a hotel in Manhattan to give her final concession speech.

She was introduced by her running mate, Virginia Senator Tim Kaine, who began his remarks by noting Clinton’s accomplishments:

And he couldn’t resist taking a quick swipe at Donald Trump:

But the tone changed when Clinton took the stage, and her comments were all about unity. She spoke of her conversation with Trump, saying that she hoped he would be a “successful president for all Americans.”

Clinton also noted that despite the outcome of the election maybe not being what she had hoped, Trump should be given a chance to be an effective leader:

“We must accept that Donald Trump is our president and we must work with him. We owe him an open mind and a chance to lead.”

She focused on the responsibility which citizens have to remain involved:

“Our responsibility as citizens is to keep doing our part, to build that better, stronger, fairer America that we seek.”

And her hopes for the future:

Clinton encouraged her supporters not to lose hope:

President Barack Obama offered remarks immediately following Clinton’s, noting that he was “proud of her for setting an example for all of our daughters.”
