How Trump Reportedly Let Rex Tillerson Know He Was Fired Is Cold as Ice

Former Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson was reportedly informed Tuesday, via Twitter, that he was out as secretary of state.

According to several reports, President Donald Trump did not give Tillerson a heads-up about the decision. Instead, the outgoing diplomat learned of his ouster along with the rest of the world:

The president tapped CIA Director Mike Pompeo as Tillerson’s replacement and named Gina Haspel, a career intelligence officer, to take over Pompeo’s post. She is the first woman to hold the position.

And Tillerson wasn’t alone in how he allegedly learned about his firing. According to one GOP aide who spoke to CNN, Republican lawmakers learned of Tillerson’s exit via social media and push notifications on their phones.

“Twitter. And news alerts, just like everyone else, apparently,” said a senior GOP aide who specializes in foreign policy.
