Hunter Biden’s former attorney Abbe Lowell is launching a new firm to back opponents of the Trump administration, CBS News reported Friday.
The firm, Lowell and Associates, will represent officials who have been “unlawfully and inappropriately targeted” by the administration, along with “entities and organizations involved in litigation over the improper revocation of grant funding by the Department of Government Efficiency [DOGE] and the federal government,” according to CBS News.
Lowell is representing New York Attorney General Letitia James, who the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) referred to the Department of Justice (DOJ) in April over a White Collar Fraud report containing evidence that she may have committed mortgage fraud.
Lowell called the referral “the latest act of improper political retribution” in an April 24 letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi.
“The stunning hypocrisy of President Trump’s complaint that the Justice Department had been ‘politicized’ and ‘weaponized’ against him is laid bare as he and others in his Administration are now asking you to undertake the very same practice,” Lowell wrote in the letter.
Several individuals who resigned from law firms that cut deals with the administration are joining Lowell’s team, including Brenna Trout Frey and Rachel Cohen, who left Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP after its deal to provide $100 million in pro bono services to the government, Politico reported.
“There is urgent need for lawyers to take on representation that runs counter to Executive wishes and actions,” Cohen, who will be Strategic & External Affairs Coordinator for the firm, wrote in a LinkedIn post Friday. “Zealous representation is a foundational element of our legal system, and how we ensure the government doesn’t overstep its authority, no matter who is in charge.”
Trout Frey slammed Skadden Arps last month for “capitulating to the Trump administration’s demands for fealty and protection money.”
“There is only one acceptable response from attorneys to the Trump administration’s demands: The rule of law matters,” she wrote in her resignation post on LinkedIn. “As an attorney, if my employer cannot stand up for the rule of law, then I cannot ethically continue to work for them.”
Along with representing Hunter Biden in his tax fraud and gun cases, Lowell has also represented Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner and former Democratic New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez.
Lowell and Associates couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
