After Guest Calls McCain a 'Songbird' When He Was Tortured, Fox News Host Issues Apology

During “Varney & Co.” on Fox Business Network on Thursday, Fox News guest Lt. Gen. Thomas McInerney told host Charles Payne the reason why Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) does not support CIA Director nominee Gina Haspel is because he was a “songbird” when he was tortured by the North Vietnamese.

“Well, she can't use it anymore because we have determined in Congress that it's not legal. The fact is, is John McCain — it worked on John. That's why they call him 'Songbird John,'" McInerney said. "The fact is those methods can work, and they are effective, as former Vice President [Dick] Cheney said. And if we have to use them to save a million American lives, we will do whatever we have to.”

Fox News later told The Daily Beast that McInerney has not been a paid analyst for almost a year.
