It was revealed that Jamie Lynn Spears’ daughter, Maddie, was seriously injured in a Polaris off-road vehicle accident, just before 3:00 p.m., on February 5.
According to People Magazine, the accident took place on the family’s property as Jamie Lynn and her husband, Jamie Watson, closely watched the 8-year-old.
Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards said in a statement that Maddie was submerged under water for at least two minutes as a result of the accident:
The child was apparently steering the vehicle to avoid running over a nearby drainage ditch. In doing so, she overcorrected causing the ATV to enter the pond. The ATV and child were instantly submerged in the water right before their eyes.
Within seconds the child’s mother, stepfather, and other family members reached the pond, dove in and attempted to rescue the child to no avail. The child was trapped and secured by the seatbelt and the ATV’s safety netting. Within two minutes, Acadian Ambulance Services arrived and assisted in freeing the child from the cold waters.
At the time, Maddie was labeled to be in critical, yet stable, condition.
Both Jamie Lynn’s father, Jamie, and her older sister, pop sensation Britney Spears, asked fans for prayers and well wishes:

Now, People is reporting that as of Tuesday, February 7, Maddie has regained consciousness. According to the magazine, a spokesperson for the Spears family released this statement to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Department:
With her father, mother and stepfather by her side, Maddie regained consciousness mid-day Tuesday, February 7. The 8-year-old daughter of entertainer Jamie Lynn Spears was involved in an ATV accident at a family home Sunday in Kentwood, La. Paramedics resuscitated her[,] and she was airlifted to a local hospital. She is aware of her surroundings and recognizes those family members who have kept a round-the-clock vigil since the accident.
The statement continued:
Doctors were able to remove the ventilator today[,] and she is awake and talking. Maddie continues to receive oxygen and is being monitored closely[,] but it appears that she has not suffered any neurological consequences from the accident.
Maddie’s stepfather and Jamie’s husband, Jamie Watson, also posted a photo to Instagram late last night thanking everyone for their prayers:
Thank you to everyone for the prayers. Maddie is doing better and better. Thank y’all so much.
It was reported yesterday, after TMZ obtained an owner’s manual for a Polaris vehicle similar to the one Maddie was driving, that the manual stated children under 10 should not be allowed to ride as a passenger. Certainly, children under 10 should not operate, as in drive, the vehicle like the 8-year-old was doing at the time of the accident.
However, it was reported by E! Online, it is common for kids under the age of 10 to drive such vehicles around their private property, especially in the area of Louisiana where Jamie Lynn and her family reside.
