Jason Aldean Opens ‘SNL’ With Moving Tribute to Vegas Victims — Then He Sings Perfect Tom Petty Song

Country Music star Jason Aldean, who was onstage in Las Vegas when last week’s horrific massacre began, opened “Saturday Night Live” this week with a moving tribute to the victims of the shooting and their families.

Aldean then sang rocker Tom Petty’s classic “I won’t Back Down,” which was particularly poignant as the legendary musician died this week at age 66.

During the cold open, Aldean said:

“This week, we witnessed one of the worst tragedies in American history. Like everyone, I’m struggling to understand what happened that night and how to pick up the pieces and start to heal.”

Aldean, who cancelled three shows in the wake of the deadly shooting out respect for the victims’ families, said he and the nation continue to hurt with them:

“I want to say to them, we hurt for you, and we hurt with you. You can be sure that we are gonna walk through these tough times together, every step of the way. Because when America is at its best, our bond and our spirit — it’s unbreakable.”
