Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) nominated Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) as speaker of the House in an impassioned speech that reflected on the congresswoman’s achievements, gave her hope for the future, and referenced ’90s hip-hop.

“The Scripture says that weeping may endure during the long night,” Jeffries began his speech on the House floor Thursday. “But joy will come in the morning.”

Thursday marked the first time in eight years Democrats have taken back control of the House of Representatives and once more with Pelosi as their speaker.

Many had seen Jeffries as a competitor to Pelosi for the speakership, but the Democrats proved Thursday that they were united behind their new leader.

“Without question, Nancy Pelosi has a track record of legislative success that is unparalleled in modern American history,” Jeffries continued, listing off achievements such as passing the Affordable Care Act and the economy bouncing back after the recession. “But Nancy Pelosi is just getting started.”

Jeffries promised Pelosi would lead the helm on policies Democrats are pushing for the future, such as a new infrastructure plan, protecting Dreamers and ending voter suppression.

“Nancy Pelosi is a woman of faith, a loving wife, a mother of five, a grandmother of nine, a sophisticated strategist, a legendary legislator, a voice for the voiceless, a defender of the disenfranchised, a powerful, profound, prophetic, principled public servant, and that’s why we stand squarely behind her today.”

Jeffries then officially made his nomination, seemingly referencing ’90s hip-hop group Naughty By Nature.

“Let me be clear, House Democrats are down with NDP,” he said. “Nancy D’Alesandro Pelosi, the once and future speaker of the United States House of Representatives, I proudly place her name in nomination. May God bless her. May God bless the United States of America.”

The New York congressman took the helm as chairman to the House Democratic Caucus on Thursday, solidifying his influence in the new Democratic-led House.
