Hakeem Jeffries Says SNAP Funding Cliff Won’t Force Democrats to End Shutdown

WASHINGTON, DC - NOVEMBER 3: U.S. Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) speaks during a press conference on Capitol Hill on November 3, 2025 in Washington, DC. This week will mark the beginning of the fifth week of the stalemate between Republicans and Democrats leading into what could be America's longest funding lapse. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Wednesday avoided directly addressing whether newly elected New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a self-described Democratic socialist, represents the future of the Democratic Party.

According to Fox News, Jeffries was asked about the record number of voters who turned out to vote for Mamdani, and if this could signal that the newly elected Mayor could be the “future of the Democratic Party.”

“Well, what Democrats have done all across the country is lean into the issue of affordability because of the fact that America’s too expensive — costs are too high, and Donald Trump and Republicans, not only have they not done anything about it, they’ve made it worse as a result of the Trump tariffs, as a result of them detonating the clean energy economy,” Jeffries responded.

“That’s why electricity bills are skyrocketing. And now, of course, they’re forcing these dramatically increased health care premiums to be visited upon the American people,” he added.

When pressed on whether he was comfortable with a socialist running the largest city in the country, Jeffries replied, “Mamdani is the mayor-elect of the City of New York. It’s incumbent upon everyone to make sure that he’s successful.”

Mamdani, a 34-year-old immigrant from Uganda, is New York City’s first Muslim mayor. Though he earned quick endorsements from progressives like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the Democratic Party’s leadership was slower to embrace him.

Jeffries did not endorse Mamdani until late October, while Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer never issued a formal endorsement but called the victory “historic.”

Should the Democratic Party embrace socialism with the new NYC mayor?

Earlier in the week, Jeffries gave a similar answer when asked if Mamdani was the party’s future, saying, “I think the future of the Democratic Party is going to fall, as far as we’re concerned, relative to the House Democratic Caucus and members who are doing great work all across the country as it relates to our need to both take back control of the House.”

Jeffries called Tuesday’s election “a big night for the American people” and “a big night for the Democratic Party,” citing Democratic victories in New York, California, Virginia, and New Jersey. He described the results as “a decisive repudiation of Donald Trump and failed Republican policies.”

The comments came as the government shutdown over expiring Obamacare subsidies entered its 36th day, the longest in U.S. history. Senate Democrats have voted 14 times to reject a House-passed bill to reopen the government.

Jeffries argued the elections showed Americans are blaming President Donald Trump and Republicans for the stalemate and predicted more Democratic victories in 2026.

“We’re going to take back control of the United States House of Representatives,” he said. “Based on the environment that we know exists, which, as Democrats, we’ve been telling you for the last several months, is the reality — but now it’s been confirmed by the American people.”

He also praised the passage of a California redistricting measure supported by Gov. Gavin Newsom, calling it a boost for Democrats.

“Stay tuned because more is coming,” Jeffries said. “Republicans are going to be unable to gerrymander their way into rigging the midterm elections. That scheme is over. Buried dead in the ground.”
