In a surprise appearance at a business forum in New York Thursday, Rapper-Evangelist-Entrepreneur Kanye West told an incredulous crowd — with a very straight face — that he would be running for president in 2024.
When the gathered crowd laughed out loud at the prospect, Kanye halted his lecture and, with a stern look on his face, asked them, “Now what ya’ll laughing at?”
After a pause, he continued. “When I run for president in 2024, we will have created so many jobs that I’m not gonna run, I’m gonna walk.”
Kanye told the crowd that he has set up the headquarters for his Yeezy fashion brand, a collaboration with Adidas, in Cody, Wyoming and is hoping to bring some of the manufacturing jobs tied to it back to the United States from Asia. The Yeezy sneaker brand is considered by some to be the most influential on the planet.
Kanye caught heat in certain circles last year because of his friendly personal relationship with President Donald Trump and his open embrace of some aspects of the President’s policies. Thursday, he called the criticism he endured a personal “Vietnam” and lamented being ridiculed not for having “a difference of opinion, but for [having] AN opinion.”
He told the crowd that he might change his name ahead of any presidential bid. “I might legally change my named to Christian Genius Billionaire Kanye West for a year,” he quipped.
The singer’s latest album “Jesus is King” is currently No. 1 on the Billboard chat and every song on the album has appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
