PHOENIX, ARIZONA - FEBRUARY 29: Arizona Republican U.S. Senate candidate and far-right election denier Kari Lake speaks during a news conference with U.S. Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) on February 29, 2024 in Phoenix, Arizona. Arizona Republican Senate hopeful Kari Lake is coming out against a decision by the state’s Supreme Court to revive a 160-year-old near total ban on abortion.

In a statement on Tuesday, Lake said, “In addition to covering the state of Arizona as a fair and honest journalist for 27 years, I have traveled to every corner of this state on the campaign trail. I speak to more Arizonans than anyone and it is abundantly clear that the pre-statehood law is out of step with Arizonans.”

“I am the only woman and mother in this race. I understand the fear, anxiety and joy of pregnancy and motherhood. I wholeheartedly agree with President Trump — this is a very personal issue that should be determined by each individual state and her people,” she continued.

Lake added, “I oppose today’s ruling, and am calling on Katie Hobbs and the State Legislature to come up with an immediate common sense solution that Arizonans can support.”

The statement went on to share Lake’s position on abortion restrictions as a senator.

Lake said she would oppose “federal funding for abortion.”

However, she also stated she would oppose “federal ban(s) on abortion.”

Instead, Lake said she supports “baby bonuses,” making adoption “more accessible and affordable,” “strengthening the economy so that Mothers can AFFORD a baby,” “protecting IVF,” “extending the child tax credit,” paid family leave, and “investing in childcare.”

The law revived the Arizona Supreme Court bans abortion from the moment of conception. However, it does provide an exception for the life of the woman.

Despite her opposition to the law now, in 2022, Lake called it a “great law” and said she was “thrilled” it was on the books.
