Kathy Griffin Called Off Her Friendship With Anderson Cooper for His Level-Headed Reaction to Her Photoshoot

The drama surrounding Kathy Griffin’s infamous photo of her holding the severed bloody head of President Donald Trump is far from over.

The fallout for the comedian has been pretty extreme since the photo was released. She lost stand-up gigs, she was fired from her New Year’s Eve spot on CNN, and celebrities from both sides of the political spectrum denounced her on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

But the one that might have hurt the most was from her own friend and former New Year’s Eve co-host, CNN’s Anderson Cooper.

He made a statement on his public Twitter account:

Now, in a recent interview with The Cut, Griffin explained that she cut off her friendship with Cooper over his response and for not contacting her before doing so.

Yashar Ali, who knows Griffin personally, confirmed all of the drama between the two:

In the following days, Griffin says four of Cooper’s CNN colleagues reached out repeatedly to Griffin to check on her and offer private support (I independently confirmed this). But Cooper didn’t contact Griffin until August 10, CNN confirmed to me.

The fact that Cooper was telling people publicly they were friends, while not checking in with her, hurt Griffin deeply. When he finally reached out to her in a series of text messages, she told him their friendship was over.

A source close to Cooper tells me that Cooper was “shocked and upset by the photo, and while he was not ready to talk to her personally about it, he still considered her to be a friend, and was publicly supportive when asked about the controversy.”

So if Cooper had spoken to Griffin just a little sooner, perhaps their friendship would have remained. But alas, it’s water under the bridge now.

Despite saying that Trump likely ruined her career, Griffin is embarking on an upcoming tour of New Zealand, Australia, and Europe. She still feels that America is too unsafe for her to tour.

Griffin recently came out and stated that she still believes she did nothing wrong.
