Protestors shouted in the background as senators delayed the start of Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation hearing on Tuesday, and the Kavanaugh family was eventually escorted out of the room.

According to Fox News’ Shannon Bream and others present, the family left during the morning hearing.

Kavanaugh was supposed to introduce his family during the hearing but was prevented from doing so because of disruptions in the proceedings.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) spoke out about his approval of the protests.

“What we heard was the noise of democracy,” Durbin said, according to the Daily Mail. “This is what we hear when free people stand up to speak. It’s not mob rule.”

The protestors included Women’s March board member Linda Sarsour, actress Piper Perabo, and UltraViolet co-founder Shaunna Thomas, according to HuffPost. They protested by screaming and causing multiple disruptions, with many being arrested or thrown out.

The Kavanaugh confirmation hearings will continue throughout the week, and many activists claim they are willing to risk arrest in order to protest.
