As the first incarcerated Americans start to make their way home, Kim Kardashian West took to Twitter to thank President Donald Trump for his work in passing the First Step Act.

The First Step Act is a piece of legislation pushed by President Trump that aims to be the “first step” in reforming the American prison system.

As IJR previously explained, the new legislation shortened lengthy prison sentences for non-violent drug offenses such as marijuana usage. It allows people in prison to earn time credits that can help shorten the sentences of those who have good behavior and work toward rehabilitation through educational courses.

The bill passed with overwhelming majorities in both the House and the Senate and it went into effect on January 1, 2019.

Because the bill addressed the length of some sentences, many prisoners are poised to be released in early January. One such person is Matthew Charles.

Charles gained national attention after many celebrities, including Kardashian West, worked to get him released from prison. Charles had been arrested for selling crack in 1996 and served to two decades in prison. He was released in 2016, but a judged ordered him to return to prison because a judge ruled he didn’t actually qualify for early release.

It didn’t matter that Charles didn’t have a single disciplinary infraction in two decades or that he got an education while inside because his drug offense had strict restrictions on early release.

The First Step Act changed all of that. To the delight of many, Charles will be released because of the new regulations signed into law by President Trump.

Kardashian West took to Twitter to thank President Trump for his work to ensure that the First Step Act became law.

As IJR previously reported, both she and her husband Kanye West had meetings with the president in the Oval Office to discuss prison reform.
