‘Good Try on Her Part’: Lara Trump Explains Why Pelosi’s Attempt to Stop the SOTU Speech Won’t Work

Lara Trump isn’t too worried about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) attempt to stop the State of the Union address.

On Wednesday, Pelosi sent a letter to President Donald Trump that rescinded her invitation to deliver the State of the Union address before Congress due to the government shutdown.

Pelosi claimed the speech must be rescheduled or delivered via a letter because the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is being impacted by the partial government shutdown. The speaker claimed that the resources needed to secure the event were “hamstrung by furloughs.”

Unfortunately for Pelosi, she forgot to consult DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen about her security concerns. As IJR reported, Nielsen took to Twitter to explain that the shutdown would have no impact on security performance of DHS and the Secret Service.

This awkward conflict left some to believe that Pelosi was only using the State of the Union invite as a political stunt because she did not have a legitimate reason for pulling the invite and never consulted Nielsen or other high-ranking officials within DHS or Secret Service before pulling the trigger.

Lara Trump, a senior adviser to the president’s 2020 campaign and his daughter-in-law, spoke to Fox News’ Sean Hannity about Pelosi’s move and explained why her stunt wouldn’t actually accomplish anything.

Watch the video below:

“She’s very smart, in a way, because the Democrats do not want this president giving another State of the Union address, Sean. You remember last year. It was one of the greatest I’ve ever seen, and honestly, I thought it was one of my father-in-law’s best speeches. He could get out there again and really turn things around, and I think they don’t want to see that happen. So she has disinvited him to give the State of the Union. The good news is that the president can give it anywhere he wants. He doesn’t have to give it there in front of Congress at Capitol Hill.”

As IJR previously reported, some members of the Senate have already proposed that he give the address from their chamber.

Lara Trump said it was a “good try on her part” to derail the speech but that it doesn’t look like it will actually make a difference.
