A left-wing organization behind several other legal challenges to President Donald Trumpās early actions is threatening to sue over efforts to remove career officials at the Department of Justice (DOJ) and FBI, the group warned in a Sunday letter.
The organization, whose founder backed efforts to impeach President Donald Trump during his first administration, has also backed lawsuits opposing Trumpās order on birthright citizenship and challenging the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Decisions to fire career DOJ and FBI officials violate employeesā due process rights, State Democracy Defenders Fund wrote in a Feb. 2 letter to Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove.
āMoreover, if information about these individuals is made publicly available, it also threatens the safety of dedicated career public servants and potentially of their innocent family members,ā the letter states. āThe continuation of this course of action is a direct assault on the national security of the American citizens you have sworn to faithfully and unselfishly serve.ā
The DOJ directed FBI leaders on Friday to provide information about employees who aided in Jan. 6 investigations, according to CNN. Several senior leaders, including heads of field offices in Washington, D.C. and Miami, were told to retire or be fired, according to multiple reports.
āIf you proceed with terminations and/or public exposure of terminated employeesā identities, we stand ready to vindicate their rights through all available legal means,ā the letter continues. āOf all people and entities, the Department of Justice and the FBI have a sacred obligation to keep the American people safe. You also have personally taken an oath to support and defend the Constitution, and you have ethical responsibilities as a Department employee and a member of the bar.ā
Norm Eisen, who co-founded the group, was counsel for the House Judiciary Committeeās Democratic majority during Trumpās first impeachment trial. He also advocated for putting Trump behind bars after he was convicted in the case brought by Democratic Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
The group launched in 2024, opposing Republican election integrity efforts in Virginia and Pennsylvania.
The State Democracy Defenders Fund did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
