Lindsey Graham Blames ‘Press’ After Resignation of UK Ambassador Trump Refused to Work With

UK Ambassador Kim Darroch resigned on Wednesday amid an uproar from the White House following a leak of diplomatic cables that revealed his candid views of President Donald Trump.

In response to memos painting Trump and his administration as inept, insecure, and incompetent, the president vowed to “no longer work” with the ambassador. Darroch, stuck in a seemingly untenable situation, submitted his resignation to the UK Foreign Office on Wednesday.

“The current situation is making it impossible for me to carry out my role as I would like,” Darroch wrote in his resignation letter.

In the days after the leaked cables were published, Darroch drew the ire of the president. Trump called the ambassador “wacky” and a “pompous fool” in a Tuesday tweet.

But Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) doesn’t seem to think the president is to blame. Instead, he took to Twitter to argue that Darroch’s resignation was the result of “a raw deal from press.”

Twitter users quickly pointed out how Graham’s attribution of blame to the press didn’t quite tell the whole story:

Graham pointed to one excerpt of the leaked memos to claim Darroch “understood the strength” of President Trump. “Trump may emerge from the flames, battered but intact, like Schwarzenegger in the final scenes of the Terminator,” Darroch wrote, though the screenshot shared by Graham leaves out some context of the comments around the administration “mired in scandal.”

It’s also unclear if the reference was as glowing as the senator seems to suggest. Schwarzenegger’s character in “The Terminator” is the antagonist of the story, nearly impossible to destroy and focused solely on destruction.

“A good example of selective media coverage of an issue,” Graham added.

Despite the war of words the bottom line is that Trump refused to work with him. (wisely so, given Darroch’s attitude). Darroch resigned from an untenable position.

Trust and discretion are necessary for effective diplomacy/ambassadorship.

In fairness, Trump and SC Trumpers will be pleased with Lindsey’s tweet, and that was its intended audience. Find someone to blame—and who better than the Press.—can’t be Trump. If all the diplomats that sent similar cables to their foreign ministers resign, will we have any foreign ambassadors???
