Democrats would have you believe voter identification laws would make it “almost impossible” for at least some groups of Americans to cast their ballots.

In Congress, Democratic lawmakers initially proposed a voting bill that would have banned voter ID requirements in federal elections.

However, a poll from Gallup released on Friday finds that the push to restrict voter ID requirements may not be going as the Democrats thought it would.

It found that 79% of Americans support requiring ID to vote, while 21% oppose the idea.

Ninety-seven percent of Republicans back such requirements. Meanwhile, 84% of independents and 53% of Democrats said the same.

Those requirements are popular among white voters, 80%, and voters of color, 77%.

That marks the smallest difference in support for a voting measure based on race in the poll.

Gallup also found that 78% of Americans support early voting, 65% support automatic voter registration, and 60% support sending absentee ballots to all eligible voters.

The poll also found some negative news for Republicans seeking to limit the use of drop boxes.

Do you think voter ID laws make sense?

Yes: 98% (53 Votes)
No: 2% (1 Votes)

Just 39% of Americans support limiting the number of drop boxes or locations for voters to return their ballots. Additionally, only 39% of Americans support purging people from voter rolls if they do not cast a ballot in any election over five years.

This poll comes after Vice President Kamala Harris has spoken out about voter identification requirements.

“I don’t think that we should underestimate what that could mean, because, in some people’s mind, that means, well, you’re going to have to Xerox or photocopy your ID to send it in to prove that you are who you are,” Harris said on BET in July 2021 about voter identification requirements. “There are a whole lot of people, especially people who live in rural communities, who don’t — there’s no Kinko’s, there’s no Office Max near them.”

“People have to understand that when we’re talking about voter ID laws, be clear about who you have in mind and what would be required of them to prove who they are. Of course, people have to prove who they are, but not in a way that makes it almost impossible for them to prove who they are,” she insisted.

Of course, this poll does not absolve Republican voting laws of their criticism.

But it turns out, apparently, Americans largely like the idea of making it easier to vote amid their busy lives. But at the same time, they support the idea that voters should have to provide proof they are who they claim to be.

What a concept.
