Well, isnât this just the kind of grand opening youâd expect from the incoming Mamdani administration? Before the guy even takes the oath of office, his pick for director of appointments has already flamed out in spectacular fashion â and over something that really shouldnât have required any vetting wizardry to catch. But hey, who needs a background check when youâre building a progressive utopia in the ashes of common sense?
Catherine Almonte Da Costa â remember the name, or donât, because sheâs already gone â was all set to help New Yorkâs next mayor staff up with âtop talent.â That was the big plan. Until, of course, some old social media posts came crawling out of the woodwork, complete with references to âmoney hungry Jews,â ârich Jewish peeps,â and, in case the point wasnât clear enough, dubbing a train line the âJew train.â Charming stuff.
These posts, reportedly made over a decade ago, were dredged up by the Anti-Defamation League, which â and letâs give credit where itâs due â actually managed to hit pause on their typical political programming long enough to call out something truly vile. The ADLâs post on X was uncharacteristically direct: tweeting things like âmoney hungry Jewsâ is indefensible. No hemming, no hawing, just a flat-out condemnation. Shocking.
So what does Da Costa do? She deletes her account (classic move) and offers up a resignation with the usual grab-bag of crisis PR talking points. You know the ones â âthis doesnât reflect who I am,â âdeep regret,â and of course, âas the mother of Jewish children,â which seems like an oddly specific postscript for someone trying to distance herself from antisemitic commentary. Almost like she hoped that little footnote might soften the blow. It didnât.
And letâs be honest here â this is the kind of mess that gets brushed under the rug when you prioritize ideology over integrity. Mamdani, a darling of the New York City far-left, wanted someone who could fill the ranks with fellow true believers. Apparently, antisemitism and anti-cop rhetoric werenât dealbreakers, at least not until the public got wind of it.
Letâs not forget: in addition to the antisemitic remarks, Da Costa allegedly posted derogatory comments about law enforcement, including calling the NYPD âpiggies.â Because of course she did. Itâs practically a rite of passage in these circles â insult the cops, disparage half the city, and get promoted. Thatâs the rĂŠsumĂŠ builder nowadays.
So now weâve got a mayor-elect scrambling to do damage control before heâs even taken office, and a city thatâs once again watching the same tired political circus roll into town with new names but the same agenda. Maybe Mamdani was too busy dreaming up new ways to defund police or cozy up to his DSA pals to bother vetting the people heâs about to hand the keys to.
And if youâre wondering where the press corps is on this, donât hold your breath. You wonât see much outrage from the usual outlets. Swap out the political affiliations and imagine, just for a second, if someone nominated by a Republican had a decade-old post referring to âmoney hungry Jews.â Youâd never hear the end of it. Headlines. Panel discussions. Boycotts. But in this case? A quick resignation, a neatly packaged apology, and everyoneâs supposed to move on. Nothing to see here, folks.
This isnât just about one bad hire. Itâs about a culture of arrogance that assumes accountability is optional and that past bigotry can be wiped away with a press release. Youâd think a city thatâs already reeling from crime, economic decay, and endless bureaucratic failure might demand a little more from its incoming leadership.
Instead, we get the âJew train.â And a mayor-elect whoâs still getting his team from Twitter. Buckle up, New York. Itâs going to be a long four years.
