Democratic New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani admitted on Tuesday that foreign-born New Yorkers led to his victory in the mayoral race.

Mamdani held an overwhelming lead among foreign-born voters, while his opponent, independent New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo, held a lead among American-born New Yorkers, according to The Patriot Polling. The incoming mayor went down the list of several ethnicities and gave them thanks for his victory in the mayoral election on Tuesday, when he defeated Cuomo with 50.4% of the vote.

“Thank you to those so often forgotten by the politics of our city who made this movement their own. I speak of Yemeni bodega owners and Mexican abuelas,” Mamdani said. “Senegalese taxi drivers and Uzbek nurses. Trinidadian line cooks and Ethiopian aunties. Yes, aunties.”

The Patriot Polling survey found that Mamdani held 62% support among foreign-born voters, while Cuomo earned 24% of their support. On the contrary, Cuomo received 40% support among American-born New Yorkers, while Mamdani had 31% of the Americans’ support.

Mamdani suffered “a serious deficit” among Jewish and Catholic voters, but held a substantial lead among the “Other” religions, including Muslims, Hindus and atheists, accruing to the Patriot Polling.

While giving a speech in October, Mamdani held back tears as he recounted the alleged discrimination that his Muslim aunt endured on the subway after 9/11. Mamdani later admitted that the woman in question was not actually his aunt, but rather a distant relative on his father’s side.

Many Democrats hesitated or even refused to endorse Mamdani, a self-professed democratic socialist who plans to enact far-left policies. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries waited until Oct. 24 to endorse Mamdani, which was less than two weeks before the election. Democratic New York Rep. Tom Suozzi endorsed Cuomo. Mamdani also received backing from fellow self-proclaimed democratic socialists Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.
