“Star Wars” actor Mark Hamill deleted a controversial social media post depicting President Donald Trump as deceased and later issued an apology after facing criticism online and from the White House.

The backlash began after Hamill shared an image on Bluesky that appeared to show Trump lying in an open grave beneath a tombstone labeled with the president’s name and the years “1946–2024.” The image included the caption “If Only,” which quickly sparked outrage across social media and among Trump supporters. The post drew even more attention because it came shortly after an assassination attempt connected to the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, making the timing especially sensitive.

Critics accused Hamill of promoting violent rhetoric against the president. The White House also condemned the actor’s post, with officials arguing it crossed a line during an already tense political climate.

White House spokesman Davis Ingle addressed the controversy in a statement to Fox News Digital, connecting Hamill’s comments to recent political appearances involving former President Barack Obama.

“Barack Hussein Obama just appeared in a video with this deranged lunatic three days ago. Now this same person is calling for President Trump to die,” Ingle said in the statement.

He also questioned why Democratic leaders had not publicly condemned the post, calling it a “disgusting call to violence.”

Hamill eventually deleted the image and replaced it with another post featuring a photo of Trump with windswept hair. Alongside the new image, the actor attempted to clarify his intentions and apologize to those offended by the original post.

“Accurate Edit for Clarity: ‘He should live long enough to…be held accountable for his…crimes.’ Actually, I was wishing him the opposite of dead, but apologize if you found the image inappropriate,” Hamill wrote.

The actor argued that his original message was intended to express frustration with Trump politically rather than physically harm him. Still, the explanation did little to quiet criticism from some conservatives who viewed the original image as irresponsible given the current political environment.

Hamill has long been one of Trump’s most outspoken critics in Hollywood. Over the years, he has frequently posted political commentary online and openly criticized the president in interviews and podcasts. In September, Hamill appeared on the “WTF with Marc Maron” podcast, where he said he was “ashamed” Americans elected Trump not once, but twice.

“It’s one thing for him to have sneaked by the first time — when he got re-elected, that’s on us,” Hamill said during the interview.

He went on to say he believed there were more “decent” and “honest” Americans than those who support Trump, adding that the election results left him disappointed in the country.

The controversy surrounding Hamill’s post reflects the increasingly heated tone of political discourse online, where celebrities, politicians, and public figures often face immediate scrutiny for inflammatory comments or imagery. In recent years, social media platforms have become major battlegrounds for political messaging, and posts viewed as encouraging violence frequently generate intense backlash from both the public and government officials.

Although Hamill apologized and removed the image, the incident quickly became another flashpoint in the ongoing culture and political divide surrounding Trump and his critics.
