Marsha Blackburn Leads by Double Digits Despite Taylor Swift’s Head-Turning Endorsement of Dem Opponent

Singer-songwriter Taylor Swift came into the political spotlight this week when she endorsed two Democratic candidates for U.S. Congress — but it doesn’t seem to be going as planned.

In an Instagram post, the star urged her followers to get out and vote in her home state of Tennessee in the midterm elections, clearly stating she doesn’t support the Republican Senate candidate, current Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn.

“As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I cannot support Marsha Blackburn,” Swift wrote. “Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me.”

I’m writing this post about the upcoming midterm elections on November 6th, in which I’ll be voting in the state of Tennessee. In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now. I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country. I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent. I cannot vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love. Running for Senate in the state of Tennessee is a woman named Marsha Blackburn. As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I cannot support Marsha Blackburn. Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me. She voted against equal pay for women. She voted against the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which attempts to protect women from domestic violence, stalking, and date rape. She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples. She also believes they should not have the right to marry. These are not MY Tennessee values. I will be voting for Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives. Please, please educate yourself on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values. For a lot of us, we may never find a candidate or party with whom we agree 100% on every issue, but we have to vote anyway. So many intelligent, thoughtful, self-possessed people have turned 18 in the past two years and now have the right and privilege to make their vote count. But first you need to register, which is quick and easy to do. October 9th is the LAST DAY to register to vote in the state of TN. Go to vote.org and you can find all the info. Happy Voting! ???

After listing a few of Blackburn’s votes in Congress, the star stated that “these are not MY Tennessee values.”

Swift continued, “So many intelligent, thoughtful, self-possessed people have turned 18 in the past two years and now have the right and privilege to make their vote count.”

“Please, please educate yourself on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values,” Swift wrote.

After the singer publicly endorsed Blackburn’s Democratic opponent Phil Breseden to her 112 million followers, voter registration sky rocketed with 65,000 people registering to vote within 24 hours of her post.

However, Swift’s effect on public support for Blackburn appears to have panned out much differently than her effect on voter registration — as Blackburn leads former Gov. Phil Bredesen by a whopping 14 points, a recent The New York Times poll found.

Blackburn responded to Swift’s diss on Fox Business, challenging her implication that the candidate opposes protecting women from violence and is “against equal pay for women.”

“Of course I support women, and I want violence to end against women. I’ve been very active in abuse shelters and child advocacy centers.”

President Donald Trump also chimed in, telling reporters, “Let’s say that I like Taylor’s music about 25 percent less now, OK?”

The Dixie Chicks criticized the US president at a concert in a foreign country. In strong words. George W Bush said they were free to speak their mind. Taylor Swift posted her opinion about a candidate in her home state. On her own Instagram account. And in a thoughtful manner explained why. Donald J Trump said (on the world’s largest stage in a foreign country) that our country has been foolish. Criticized the Democrats and the US intelligence agencies. Praised the murderous dictator he stood next to. Bragged about his election win. And basically stated there was no reason not… Read more »

I think Taylor swift is someone who tries to pin other woman down(Bad blood) remember! So,Her endorsing doesn’t make any difference..Everybody respected the fact she didn’t say anything politically!I think she’s following Katy’s footprints..But her career will be over..If she does that like Katy’s!

It is nice to hear that she gave voter registration a little boost, and she is correct to point out you should study the candidates and issues, but I’m reasonably sure she wasn’t thinking of helping Blackburn…

Taylor Swift is sooooo important.
Maybe all the boys who have been mean to her will regret having done so and who cares?
