During a press conference on Thursday, McCarthy accused Democrats of neglecting legislative responsibilities, such as developing and passing a spending bill and instead focusing on the impeachment inquiry.
“And the worst part of all of this, we just had Veterans Day. Next week government funding stops. And we’re not funding the troops. We’re not giving the pay raise that we believe we should.”

McCarthy went on to urge Congress to pass the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
“We would only be stronger as a nation in our negotiations with China if we passed United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. But none of that is taking place. We’re not spending this week talking about the funding we need to forward. No, no one’s mentioned a word about that because everything’s been taken over about impeachment. The same thing this majority has done for the last three years.”
Funding for the government expires next week, and lawmakers are currently looking at passing a short-term spending bill to keep the government funded till December 20, as IJR has previously reported.
White House officials signaled that Trump would support the short-term spending bill and added that he hopes to get funding for the construction of a border wall.
McCarthy said Democrats should pass a budget to provide resources for the military.
“First thing that I think a majority should is pass a budget, which the Democrats have not done. They should actually make sure that they fund the government, which we have not done, and we’re working to have another continuing resolution. So our troops are not being provided the resources they need or the pay raise that they have earned.”
He added, “The only person I saw doing the job they were elected to do was the president of the United States, meeting with another foreign leader.”
McCarthy said he was disappointed with the Democrats’ impeachment push and what he said were broken promises by Democrats about how they would govern.
