During John McCain’s Memorial Service, Meghan McCain Said Her Father’s America Was Always Great

At the memorial service for the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), his daughter, Meghan McCain, gave a fiery eulogy, saying, “The America of John McCain has no need to be made great again, because America was always great.”

McCain’s statement is a not-so-subtle response to President Donald Trump’s famous 2016 campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.”

McCain further slammed “cheap rhetoric” from people who will never sacrifice as much as her father did when he was a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

“He was a great man,” she said. “We gather here to mourn the passing of American greatness.”

“The real thing, not cheap rhetoric from men who will never come near the sacrifice he gave so willingly, nor the opportunistic appropriation of those who lived lives of comfort and privilege while he suffered and served,” McCain continued.

The remarks come in wake of President Trump‘s not being invited to attend any of the memorial events. The New York Times reported, however, the senator did not hold a grudge against the president, but he just did not have a lot of respect for him.
