U.S. first lady Melania Trump continues to promote her “Be Best” initiative to help children with major obstacles they face today — and she says despite her critics, she is still committed to it.

In Washington, D.C. on Thursday, Trump spoke at the Family Online Safety Institute conference and explained that it’s not “surprising” her critics “have chosen to ridicule me” over her initiative, but “that’s okay.”

“It is not news or surprising to me that critics in the media have chosen to ridicule me for speaking out on this issue, and that’s okay,” Trump said during the conference.

She addressed that she is committed to promoting her “Be Best” campaign in concentrating on children’s well-being, social media use, and opioid abuse.

“I remain committed to tackling this topic because it will provide a better world for our children,” Trump said.

She explained that she is going to use the attacks from her critics as motivation to bring about awareness, and she hopes people will follow her in doing the same:

“And I hope, that like I do, you will consider using their negative words as motivation to do all you can to bring awareness and understanding about responsible online behavior.”

The first lady previously shared her reasoning for wearing an “I really don’t care. Do U?” jacket when visiting migrant children. It had people going crazy with reactions as they thought she was making the statement toward the children.

“It’s obvious. I didn’t wear the jacket for the children,” she explained during an ABC interview.

However, her jacket was a statement toward her critics and the “left wing media.”

“I want to show them that I don’t care. You can criticize, whatever you want to say, you can say. But it will not stop me to do what’s right,” she added.

On her first solo trip to Africa in recent months, Trump visited Ghana, Malawi, Kenya, and Egypt, and she was able to take “Be Best” international — spending time with children at hospitals, schools, as well as visiting with prominent figures in those countries.

She also spent time at a hospital in Philadelphia with mothers and their newborns who suffer from the opioid crisis, saying, “As the caretakers of the next generation, it is our responsibility to protect our most valuable and vulnerable — our children.”
